July 1 Theme: Gluttonous Appetites

Welcome to week 3 of the Seven Deadly Sins series! Last week’s contributions to the theme of Lust proved to come from completely different directions once again. Who knew that one theme could cover the birth of a child, a hunting predator, and the physical connection between people in one shot?

That’s what makes these themes fascinating. Everyone approaches each theme from a different angle, and we’re looking for more angles!

The Third Sin

This week’s theme could be straightforward, but I’m hoping it also turns out some interesting interpretations.

Theme: Gluttony

Structure: Free verse

Gluttonous Appetites

Gluttony is the over-consumption of anything to the point of extravagance or waste, although it most commonly refers to food. The third circle of Hell is reserved for gluttons in Dante’s Inferno, where they “lie… sightless and heedless of their neighbors, symbolizing the cold, senseless, and empty sensuality of their lives.”

I hope to see some diverse interpretations once again. If you think you have the creative chops, submit your poem to redstringpapercuts@gmail.com, and we will publish it next Tuesday, July 1.

Happy writing!
