Misplaced Missive #207 – Icarus Wings

I wish I could write a happier song:
With a mellow melody and a catchy chorus,
But joy always leaves me voiceless,
And the lyrics feel like I’m forcing ’em.

You’ve given me so much I cannot repay,
And it cuts to the quick that my forte,
Is the one way, I will never manage,
To use to your advantage.

I wish I knew the words to lift you,
But all I have are Icarus’ wings;
Curses that cling like bindings,
Ugly things that are beneath you,
That would only serve to defeat you.

You held me in your sway,
Gently chasing the vultures away,
Keeping my miseries at bay,
But we both knew it couldn’t stay that way.

To my dismay, the comfort I found in your company,
Caused a collapse of passion and purpose.
I plummeted downward toward the surface,
But I won’t doom you with me.

I wish I could offer more than a funeral song:
A depressing dirge with a crashing chorus,
But anything more? Anything uplifting? Leaves me voiceless,
And I don’t want you to fall victim to them.

I wish I knew the words to lift you,
But all I have are Icarus’ wings;
Curses that cling like bindings,
Ugly things that are beneath you,
That would only serve to defeat you.
