Saturday of Book Reviewing – Burnham’s Egghead: Or, You Can’t Survive on Ideas Alone

Written by Bo Burnham and illustrated by Chance Bone, Egghead was published in 2013. I was familiar with Burnham’s stand up, and really, that’s why I first purchased the book.

I’m glad that I did. It’s cute and funny and quirky and all the things that Bo exemplifies in his stage work. I hope someday soon he’ll release another live special, but even if it’s a long time coming, it will be well worth the wait. And hell, he’s only 27 so he’s got plenty of time to produce more material. To bind our time in the meantime, I highly recommend Chris Rock’s new Netflix special, Tambourine, which was actually directed by Burnham. But all this deviates from the review!

I don’t want to spoil this one for you guys. It’s a fast read, so there’s no need for me to cliff note it for you. It’s uplifting, if you need something light; aware, if you need something thought provoking; and occasionally, weird as all hell.

Here’s one entry to take with you:

The Letter

I wrote you a letter,
and then another letter,
and another, and another,
until I wrote you a word.

So I wrote you a word,
and then another word,
and another, and another,
until I wrote you a sentence.

So I wrote you a sentence,
and then another sentence,
and another, and another,
until I wrote you a letter.

I hope it finds you as I found you.

Yours truly,
Yours, truly.

See? Both cute and quirky.
